Hi guys! My name is Caryn Foster. I am from Norfolk, VA but I go to school in Harrisonburg, VA. I am a sophomore at James Madison University and I study Elementary Education.
I work part time at a restaurant on our campus to make some extra money; I really only got the job last fall when I knew that I was going on this trip and wanted to be able to contribute my own money if necessary.
In my free time at college, I’m either doing homework, going to yoga with some friends, watching movies or being involved in Intervarsity (the Christian organization I am involved with on campus). I’m in a Bible study that meets once a week and these people are also my closest friends at school. Other than that, I love sports. I played basketball, tennis, and soccer in high school and love to play when I can at college. I also love music. I play piano and guitar and I sing. Since I can’t fit a piano in my dorm room, I just play my guitar a lot at school. I’m also in a JMU choir which has been super fun.
This is probably the most random facts about me, but here it goes. I have an irrational fear of squirrels. I LOVE chocolate- and by love I mean that I can eat a bag a week if I’m not careful. I have a plant that I named Earl; I know, weird. I love sweet tea. I love ANY type of food, Vietnamese is my favorite followed by Thai and Indian. I’m a really big nerd. I love school and learning. I love math and science especially. My friends laugh at me because I have the Toms that have Calculus written all over them. I love the beach, which is near my home, but I also love the mountains which is where my school is. I love the outdoors-hiking is something I love to do, but none of my friends at school are the outdoorsy types so I don’t get to go very often. I love watching the sunset on campus with the mountains in the background. Creation always reminds me of how big God is.
I’ve actually been on 5 missions trips before; they were each for about a week. Tennessee, Washington D.C., Brussels, and Buff Bay, Jamaica were all trips that I went on through my church . My last missions trip was with my high school after my senior year to Managua, Nicaragua. The second I left Nicaragua, I wanted to go back so I am VERY excited about this trip!
Like I said, I am so excited to go back to Nicaragua. I know that God is going to challenge me so much through 2 months overseas. I’m a little nervous about being away from home that long, in a foreign country. God has really been just preparing my heart for this trip. I’ve been learning to trust Him more and more. I know that in serving is when I tend to learn the most about God and about myself so I am ready for a very eye-opening summer. I am so excited to spend our summer together growing closer to one another and growing closer to Christ!
